UHW Staff are locked out

Feb 4, 2009. Alameda, California. SEIU locks out the staff of local United Healthcare Workers-West (UHW-West). We demand to bargain over changes to our working conditions and are told to leave or be arrested.

As of today, most staff have been laid off, terminated, or resigned in conscientious objection to SEIU's program of dismantling UHW-West. Many have since volunteered to help organize the members of UHW-West out of SEIU and into the newly-formed National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW).

I thought unions were supposed to create job securety, not take it away. I have been thinking about joining a union because all of the hospitals that I have been applying to are all locked up by unions. Aren't closed shops illegal?

Did that change?
