45 watt CO2 laser etching a name on a wedding mug.
The laser physically marks the glass surface using a very high DPI setting (this was done at 600 DPI, capable of 1200 DPI). Glass has naturally occurring microscopic bubbles, not visible by the human eye. The laser uses heat to expand the gas in these bubbles to literally explode tiny craters into the surface of the piece. Using a higher DPI setting ensures clear engraving.
The paper you see on the mug is unprinted news paper, soaked in water for a few minutes. This cools the glass during the process, keeping the text crisp and clean.
Sorry for the reflectiveness of the safety panel...it's quite a bit more visible now than it was on the camera while shooting.
