A lot of you guys are taking this way out of context. Quite often the purpose of these drills is simply to blend with your opponent. And train your waist and speed as on the las punch you try to get there first thus the students push each other trying to there first. However not just these exercises but many others can be adopted to work in a reall fight. please remmber Karate is Karate you have to make it work for you Sesnei Jonathan Bolt UK.
@haffoc And becuz even though I had only 5 years experience in Karate I had to learn boxing again when i began Muay Thai. Cuz i dropped my hand all the time after punching. I dont say you have to have it all the time by the head. But when you get in the dangerzone. thats the zone when he can hit you with a jab. Well than better get your defence high. cuz it aint point sparring so you have to block one time. When a combination comes at ya then you have to be closed.
@haffoc I ve had totally 5 years experience in karate, but I followed it whith Muay Thai and Jiu Jiutsu. Now training 20 years in Martial Arts. Also I fight MMA in Holland and I have 10 wins and 1 loss. Said that is not about to bragg, but to tell that I know what Im talking about. Yes its true people let their defence fall. But thats not good and when it happens once in while its not so dangerous as all the time. Cuz like me I counter on that. When some goes back low I counter high.
@minasz Great you have a brown belt, which means 2-3 years experience? I have two black belts and 40 yrs exp. Whether you put your off hand by the face depends upon the context. In self defense, which karate is intended to address, this is less important than in the UFC or point sparring. But even in the UFC and boxing, fighters drop their off hands all the time. It seems to be simply a natural movement that even trained guys cannot avoid. Check out some of the videos and see for yourself.
@haffoc No im not with you on this one. I know what Karate is. I have a brown belt in Kyoskushin and I did Wado Kai. I feel the defense should always be in front of the head. Cuz how says its a haymaker. It could be a combination attack...and what then? This is not point system. You see mashida in UFC also have his hands in front of his face instead on the waste and he s from Karate.
@minasz these blocks are intended to defeat a street type blow, such as the haymaker. The off hand, the one not blocking, should be readed for an immediate counter strike. This is not boxing. Karate is designed for defeating the common street thug.
looks painful D:
