Special Report: Strong quake jolts SW China
Workers have now pulled out the last car of a freight train trapped inside a tunnel on the railway linking Baoji, in northwestern Shaanxi Province, and Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan. The train derailed and caught fire after hitting rocks dislodged in the quake.
Workers had good reason to celebrate on Thursday morning. After ten grueling days, they got the last freight car out.
Long Jing, Vice-director of Railway Relief Headquarters, said, "We now can say our rescue work at this tunnel has achieved major progress. "
The Baoji-Chengdu Railway is considered a lifeline linking northwestern China and its southwestern provinces. It's an important access to Sichuan.
The Wenchuan earthquake caused this tunnel to collapse.
A 40-car freight train then derailed and became trapped inside, paralyzing the line.
Now that all the cars have been pulled, workers will focus on repairing and re-inforcing the tunnel.
Authorities expect to have the job completed and railway traffic back to normal in 48 hours.
