This is the story of a Hospital in Lacor, near Gulu, in Northern Uganda. It is also a love story and considering that St. Mary's Hospital has survived for almost 50 years, despite a twenty year old civil war and has, since its foundation in 1959, treated millions of patients among the most destitute, it is also a success story. Of the 3,126,888 patients who were cared for by the Hospital and its peripheral health centres only considering the data since 1990, over half were under 6 years old. The Hospital has trained a whole class of Ugandan doctors, nurses and technicians, who now run the Hospital. It is the principal private employer in Northern Uganda and carries out advanced research and development projects, including a variety dedicated to HIV. All this was made possible through the selfless efforts of two doctors who had a dream; a dream that has become a reality even in the face of huge personal sacrifice of the many who took part and continue the dream today: in 2006 the Hospital's 570 Ugandan staff (including 35 doctors) treated 36.343 in-patients and 251.737 out-patients, 50% of whom are under six years of age.
