Your bladder is a hollow organ that expands as it fills with urine. Because it is made of muscular tissue, it can also contract and force urine to pass out of the body, through the urethra. Your urethra carries urine from the bladder all the way through the opening in the penis.

Your doctor feels that it is necessary to examine the interior of the urethra and bladder, to try to determine the cause of a problem that you may be having.

Symptoms that may call for a routine Cystoscopy include: * Persistent infection of the urinary tract * Bladder stones * Bleeding while urinating * Irritation due to polyps, or * Changes to the bladder caused by cancer.
Medical Malpractice
Cystoscopy is a simple procedure during which your doctor will insert a well-lubricated, instrument called a cystoscope through your urethra and into your bladder.

The cystoscope allows your doctor to visually inspect the interior of your bladder. It also allows your doctor to remove small pieces of tissue for later examination and even to crush small bladder stones, should any be present.
Medical Malpractice
Any tissue that your doctor removes from your bladder will be sent immediately to a laboratory for analysis. Your doctor will ask the laboratory to check for any sign of cancer or other abnormality.

Like Fred, I usually have this done semi-annually, and it's nothing to be feared. You feel a slight tweak when the scope is passing through the area surrounded by the prostate, but overall it's relatively painless. Unlike routine office cysto exams, for procedures like that shown in the video, they'll usually sedate you and perform the procedure in the operating room.

CYSTOSCOPY IS USUALLY PAINLESS (ALMOST). I need this done to me about every 7-10 months and I do not fear it at all. Sorry you had a terrible experience, David. You don't need "to be put to sleep", but it is normal to have a local anaesthetic. This is mixed in with a water-based lube (like K-Y), and they squirt about 20ml up your dick from a syringe (no needle). 20 min later, I hardly feel a thing

I'm sorry, but I'm just astounded by how fussy and defensive guys are about procedures like this. Women go for a gyn exam twice a year and have a speculum put into them, but you don't see them whining and fussing. But bring any sort of medical instrument near a guy's urethra and it's a 'very serious malpractice issue' that 'really hurts' and should be given hours of careful deliberation & consideration as to whether it's necessary. I'm a medical student incidentally, not a clueless passery-by.
