Buried among all the pips and pops of beacons and whatnot, some really odd things can show up on shortwave.

In this example the alarm noise is accompanied by what sounds like a dying diesel engine and squeaky wheels.

I tried a few different modes, with plain AM showing it best. The pitch of the alarm noise seems to be going up and down by itself (I only briefly tried tuning it on SSB).

It wasn't local interference - at the top of the hour (about 15:00UTC) it all ceased.

Suffice to say, it's creepy.

According to ENIGMA, an alarm noise was mentioned being heard way back in 2002.

  • Thanks! The first recording of this alarm noise had about 500 views, there's a few others I've recorded of it. I actually haven't listened to this one for a while, and wow, I forgot how bizarre it was!

  • Nothing odd about this. Often almost on all the South Korean stations that have broadcast to the North you hear this. As soon as the programs sign off the noise stops. Al it is is North Korean jamming. In the evening hours in Asia when the Anti-Pyongyang stations are on air this is very common. But unlike the USSR and today China jamming from the DPRK is doe snot work well.

  • @willfox12345 , at the soul level all lifeforms are frequency, so this could explain your fascination for these sounds.

  • it is an aircraft locator beacon sending out GPS Coordinates, and a basic alarm so we can find you when your plane crashes

  • Sounds like someone playing Pacman... or rather, how the old 80's arcades used to sound when you would first walk into one...

  • it is possible the sound you had heard was a shortwave radio jammer.

  • in all fairness, that could be some kid that got a hold of daddy's amatuer radio while he is at work, and is having a bit of fun!

  • On that day, a solar storm passed and killed all communication for periods of time. You may have been in the middle of that solar storm.

  • jammer, or a signal used to occupy a frequency so nobody else can use it. then when the user needs to send a message at a pre-determined time, they stop the signal and transmit their broadcast. can also be used to occupy one part of a frequency while a carrier signal is buried in the side band, if i understand it correctly.

  • I like commenting on your videos, as you can tell. The beepbeepbeep is a jammer from cuba. i've picked it up really strong in florida before.
