Music from Australia and New Zealand in the year 1978:

In 1978, a 50's-revival musical titled 'Grease' was made into a movie and consequently became a world-wide phenomenon. Australian pop show Countdown got caught up in the wave and went through extraordinary lengths to promote the movie to an Aussie audience. Countdown was also the first television program to play the 'You're The One I Want' segment, during the early course of the movie's success.

This feature includes red carpet interviews with Aussies Olivia Newton-John, Andy Gibb and the movie's producer and entertainment entrepreneur Robert Stigwood.

This piece also includes a short interview with Australian songwriter John Farrar - the composer of Olivia's bigger hits including 'You're The One I Want' and 'Hopelessly Devoted To You'.

  • That host looks like Paul McCartney.

  • I'm sure Ian 'Molly' Meldrum (that host) would be very flattered to hear that. Iggy Pop called him 'dog face'.

  • these were the times were celebrities had charisma. now they suck.

  • Yes, they do suck today. The difference is in the attitude.

'Celebs' of this time still had a sense of normality as if they're ordinary people with that extra-bit of talent. Now, it's like they feel they were born to be different from everybody else - as if they're better than the average human being.

  • The reporter.. drunk or coke? no worries mate!

  • The reporter being Ian 'Molly' Meldrum was most likely both drunk and coked-up.

  • Ah, damnit. Mr. Stigwood seems to be a mild mannered one. I feel very badly what happened to him 12 years prior to this.
