@SEJKay Very true. Jack was a very narcissistic character back at that time. He was also raised to believe that because he was a Deveraux that he could have whatever and whomever he wanted and when he met Kayla he thought that he could have her but by the time he'd come to Salem she was already in love with Steve but Jack's ego wouldn't let him accept it and walk away like a normal human being. But as you said behind the scenes later Steve was feeding that behavior by "giving" Kayla to Jack.

His obsession with her was narcissistic. One, he wanted her and he wasn't accustomed to losing especially to a "hoodlum" like Steve. He just never chose to see the reality of the situation, that he had to use his illness to guilt Kayla into marriage. Of course Steve was also helping jack behind the scenes.

Jack was never truly in love with Kayla in the first place. It was more of some kind of obsession than love. Steve was Kayla's one and only true love. Jack knew it all along but he was so obessed with Kayla that he had to have her.
