Back in those days pros using 35mm cameras were using the same format, so as long as you use a compact with a good lens with a good film followed by use of a good lab, you're going to get much the same results. These days digital compacts have MUCH smaller sensors than DSLRs so you will get sub standard results.

@stevenstreet483 not completely true. Timing, framing, ideas, attitude, directing is as important. Many catalog photographers have all those elements you named and make ordinary pictures. Fashion is a multi billion industry, give that people some credit too.

The means of capture is not as important as everything else. They have a fantastic location, great lighting,great photo lab, hair crew, makeup crew, and most importantly....a beautiful model! Even if her mom was shooting it, it would look great because it's everything done before hand that makes a great shot.
