question. i just got 3 seeds from avocados that my mom bought a while ago. they were left in the refrigerator for a while so they were spoiled by the time i took the seeds out. will this effect whether or not they grow? i started 1 out in a cup of water w/ the toothpick thing a couple days ago and there's some kind of gunk that is forming on the seed and toothpick and the water became a brown/reddish color overnight. is this normal? the other one i just put in soil just to see how it turns out.

I tried this with a store bought organic avocado as well as an avocado from a friends tree. After 3 months, nothing happened at all. What did I do wrong? I water it so the bottom half is submerged (I'm using bottled water, should I use tap?), and I used wooden toothpicks. Please advise.
