This video shows how using a graphite pencil to draw simple line hatching. It also shows how the appearance of a square shape can be dramatically altered by varying the spacing between the hatching lines.
At first glance it will seem exactly the same as the first pen-and-ink sketches. .. It is the same in that it uses HATCHING.
However, drawing with a pencil has many strengths over using a hard nib-pen.
The main advantage of graphite pencils comes from the wide range of hard and soft leads available. Although it can be hard to get constant thickness lines with soft lead pencils there are plenty of strengths, which include
* Smooth shading
* Easy to erase
* Light to dark tones are easy to produce
The great thing is if you can master pen-and-ink hatching, you will have no trouble with pencil hatching.
It is a true pleasure.
But, without having tried pen-and-ink the value of hatching and shading with pencil would be lost.
