A luxury motor-yacht sails out of the harbor through the 150ft wide channel of the New Bedford-Fairhaven Hurricane Barrier. Completed in 1966 it has yet to be given the ultimate test to withstand a Category 3 Hurricane for which it was designed for. Hurricane Bob struck here on August 19, 1991 as a Category 2 system. The dike kept out 6.8 feet of tidal surge from the inner harbor. For more info:
