Senator Leahy's Un-American Activities Commission is a categorically BAD idea. It would criminalize differences of opinion on policy issues, a formula for totalitarianism or -- when a nation has a solid opposition party -- civil war. The bottom line of a democratic republic is that we define our differences on the campaign trail and resolve them at the voting booth.
Criminalizing the opposition is a standard ploy of tyrants and dictators. What does that say about Mr. Leahy?
He was a little long in saying so but he made some good points. A "truth commission" would be warranted if war crimes had been performed and we did not have the possibility of a war crimes trial. As that is not the case here, this looks a lot like a witch hunt since the "prosecutor" is authorized to present evidence but the "defense" is not allowed to as you would have in a fair trial. A one sided trial is a kangaroo court.
