The true inspiration for this goes back to Boys Town in Nebraska and Father Flanagan. The story is that Fr. Flanagan always had an open door policy and wayward. homeless children could always come there and have shelter and warmth and a meal. One day Fr. Flanagan saw two boys walking down the road toward the main gate with one boy carrying the other piggyback style and as Fr. Flanagan rushed out to help, asked if he could help, he was told:Thats OK Father, He ain't heavy, He's my Brother! True

I was told by a War Historian that the inspiration for this song was a true event that happened in Vietnam. The story goes that a 10 year-old girl in Vietnam carried her 4 year brother, who was mortally wounded for miles to an American Hospital. When they asked her how she did it, she responded, "he isn't heavy, he's my brother!" Does anyone know if this was the true inspiration?
