@goodhammer2 just so you know modern studies also show that if one does not know of the disease, and it goes untreated, it has the potential to cause seizures as well as mental retardation

@goodhammer2 An accumulation of phenylalanine can damage the nervous system and cause things like mental retardation, it does not mean it is untreatable, (yes, people with PKU can have a regular life), but without any kind of regular checks too much phenylalanine could get in their body and this can cause this damage.

@goodhammer2 no, PKU leads to seizures and mental retardation WITHOUT proper diet. (Diet of a person with PKU includes foods with low levels of phe, so basically a vegan diet for life.) It is possible to live a regular life with PKU only with a proper diet

Ironic that during a video about PKU there is a commercial for Diet Coke- which contains Nutra Sweet, which is like poison to PKUers.

this video is false in the fact that it quotes that "in later stages PKU can lead to seizers and mental retardation" when modern studies of the genetic disease show that people whom have PKU live regular lives. i also find it ironic that you uploaded this a 2007 while the studies i meantioned earlier were done in the late '90's. the studies you meantioned in the video were done in the '60's when it was a new disease and we knew very little about the uncommon genetic didorder.
