they files are both the same size the windows is a .exe with is super compressed but unpack it its the same size. the .dm is a full disk image nothing needs to be installed what so ever only needs to be mounted by the system.
i mac one both installing and installing hands down! The only reason that mac took longer was because thunderbird did not offer a mac zip most dont, but most dont for windows either this one just happened to have one so it was a bad comparison! MAC RULES
The size might be larger because of the universal binaries that might be included with the application. The universal binaries are used to run the app within older PPC architectures; there are ways of removing those unnecessary universal binaries when you have installed it on your machine. Xslimmer is one application that can quickly remove the unnecessary binaries.
I saved up to 4 gb of space by "fixing" my 12 gb of apps so that they only took 8 gb.

You didn't do a clean uninstall on the mac. Go to your libraries and see all the footprint of thunderbird left there.
Understand how things work, not just what's graphically shown to you.
