First #2, then #1 startup of the JT8D-17 Engines. You can hear the burner cans igniting at the same time that the ignitors cause the frequency "burst" in the PA system.

  • Previous comment deleted due to disgruntled former NWA Mechanic. Probably one of the very same who sabotaged some airplanes and locked up the toolboxes. I heard all about that, and because of that, any support I had for AMFA flew out the window.

  • The JT8D has gotten a nice little new lease on life lately, with JSTARS (wisely) selecting it as the most economical choice for the E-8 re-engine project, and for another very exciting application which I'll leave to your imagination.

  • I believe it is going on a new supersonic business jet. Right?

  • For those who may be wondering, the WHIR WHIR WHIR sound you hear when you hear the fuel kick on... Those are the fuel pump starter motors..

  • Love this vid - DC-9 spoolups are so awesome, as are the B-727's.

    Good vid/sound!

  • I will miss those loud, smoky, JT8Ds when they're gone.. Only to be replaced by little regional jet hairdryers.

  • use a320 at leat thier only 20 year old not 40 years old and if you like dc 9s think 717s new and safe dont get me rong i like dc9s flew on them as a cild now im 31 but nothing last for ever its a air plan not a car.

  • Love the sound of those engines, the Class 56 on notch 8 sounds similar to this even though its a locomotive!

  • @mitchnvic The 727's engines made a sound that spoke to the soul :-)

  • @briarsmoke Spark plugs on steroids.LOL

  • The old DC9 and MD80 feels like an old Cadillac - grand, solid, well-made, proud. It is like flying on a piece of solid iron through the sky. They will never make anything like it again.

  • @JMG717 The sound is actually the plugs recharging to ignite the fuel. It draws so much power that you can hear it over the intercom.

  • The whir-whir-whir sound is electrical discharge from the ignitors. They're like big spark plugs that ignite the fuel/air mixture in the combuster. Once the fire is lit, the ignitors switch off.

  • @jetfreak4 and the tupolevs are just ugly

  • Curse those RJ's they've almost wiped away the 717, jam packed the 100 seat market. and are just an eyesore.

P.S. when i first saw the CRJ 1000 I thought it HAD to be photoshopped.

  • @antimatterXXXIII Supersonic travel I agree isn't necessarily needed, but it sure would be a nice bonus...the main reason we don't have supersonic travel is that nobody has yet found a way to make an airplane truly quiet enough, large enough, and fuel efficient enough to do it. I suspect that one day that could happen...we certainly are much closer to that possibility. If we had a way to get that accomplished, people would be all over the idea. Until supersonic flight can be cheap, not happening
