Alternative vote - what is it?

In the UK, the Government is going to be having a referendum on Thursday 5 May 2011 on whether we want to change the way we vote. This is a simple explanation of our choices!

after further researching av voting, i have come to the conclusion the the no to av campaign has no valid arguements,

1. they make the system seem extremely confusing, anyone who can watch 1:45 worth of a youtube video would know its simple.

2. they make it seem like votes are not counted fairly, with this system votes are counted even fairer.

3. they try applying this to sports, in sports where there is 1 round the person on top is the winner, in multi rounds the person with most points wins

@JoD42 maybe not a "weakness" per se, but it seems the stoic and dogmatic see reassessing views shows lack of ability to decide, when in fact better reflects changing times. I think this view is taken more in religious that political spheres: a lifetime evangelist might think of an agnostic deist "he doesn't have a clue what his God even resembles or if He exists, I KNOW what God wants and what his characteristics are". She may be entirely wrong AND has spent less time examining the evidence!

If you are keeping your own moral integrity and forming your own views on political issues, then I'd always thought voting for the party that matches those best shows conviction in your values. And parties change, so you have to keep re-evaluating.

I agree. It's good to think about things for yourself, allow for new info & not support something just because it's what you've always done.

@simonzon no the second pref of voters who still have their first choice candidates in still vote for their first choice, the ones who can no longer vote for their first choice as they have been eliminated, vote for their second choice. everyone gets their prefered vote. Unless of course a person only voted for one candidate and they are the one that is eliminated. Does that help?
