The Spring Pole Lathe dates back a few hundred years for sure. We have records of it being used in Britain in the 1700s in the Upper Wycombe area. Bodgers (Men that operated the Spring Pole Lathe) would set up their Bodger Hovel in a stand of Beech Trees. They the cut the trees, split the wood and shaved it down to an almost round piece of wood that was then placed in the Lathe for turning. His whole purpose was to turn chair legs and stretchers that would be sold to the chair making factory. The Windsor Chair was bascially derived from this simple combination of crafts people. I fell in love with the Spring Pole Lathe while demonstrating at the Pioneer Exhibit of the Kinmount Fair. It was there that I met Roni Breslford and came to use the Spring Pole Lathe that her husband Mark had made. Mark had passed away a few years earlier and the Lathe had not been used since that time.
