Urban Studio in Harrisburg, PA

In declining areas of Harrisburg, PA, the urban studio has been a proposal to reanimate the downtown area and surrounding neighborhoods. These places are designed to integrate a working and dwelling environment in the same building while contributing to the revitalization of neighborhoods. Such a proposal exists here in a vacant site among row homes on Market Street.

The clients for this design are two young musicians who will be recording, producing, and performing their music here, as well as making it their home. This design focuses on the division of public and private spaces, as well as mitigating reverberant sound. Friends and guests can come to view and hear the artists' shows at the lowest level: the bunker. This space has the appeal of a nightclub blended with the raw aesthetic of a garage. Sound is electronically amplified but passively dampened by absorptive panels that line the ceiling and walls. Enveloped in earth, sound is arrested in the space before it escapes to the street and neighbors' homes. A buffer floor separates the performance area from the owners' private residence. Private ladder connections bridge this gap into each resident's bedroom on the second floor. This floor has the primary entrance for the owners via an adjacent public staircase. The second floor also has a shared balcony that overhangs Market Street and has a shared bathroom. The third floor accommodates a kitchen, recording studio, editing area, and living room.
