The global IT industry's spending will sink by 6.8 per cent to $2.28 trillion this year compared with 2008 according to analyst firm Gartner.
But it's not all bad news. Researchers at Gartner predict an IT spending growth of 2.3 per cent next year.
The spending varies by vertical industry. Financial services will lead all industry markets for IT spending in 2009 with a total of $502.6 billion.
The agriculture, mining and construction markets will see the steepest decline in IT spending this year at a 9.2 per cent drop from last year.
Gartner's research director, Kenneth Brant, says vendors should develop financial models for "project justification" and sales training on selling to the financial buyers and business bosses.
