Faisal Shahzad, a Pakistani-born US citizen, was charged on Tuesday with terrorism and attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction in Saturday's botched attack in New York city's Times Square.

Investigators in Pakistan are fanning out across the country in search of possible links to the New York's suspect.

Shahzad confessed to receiving explosives training in Waziristan,a tribal region in Pakistan where the Taliban is suspected of operating, according to the complaint filed in a Manhattan federal court.

Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra reports from the port city of Karachi on Shahzad's family ties to the city and his alleged links to terror groups in the area.
