An Enigma with many variations. Cart ruts are long parallel grooves cut into the rock that abound on rocky surfaces on the island of Malta. It is difficult to establish when and why this phenomenon originated. Archaeologists do not agree on their provenance. Some say that most of the cart ruts originated in Roman times, others contend that they are earlier and pre-date even the Phoenicians, going back to the Bronze Age. All schools of thought cite compelling reasons for their case. The largest concentration of cart ruts can be found in the area that has meanwhile been dubbed 'Clapham Junction', on the Rabat-Dingli plateau, about half way between Verdala Palace and Dingli Cliffs.
In the same area one can find extensive Roman quarries and also the complex of caves called "Għar il-Kbir". These caves may have been inhabited by local farmers since prehistoric times. The residents were forced to take up more appropriate accommodation in the village of Siggiewi as late as 1835.
Beautiful presnetation of the famous cartruts. 5***** Thanks for sharing
