JCCC Board of Trustees 4-29-2010
Awards and recognition
· The JCCC cross country teams had an outstanding season in 2009. The men's team raced to a sixth-place finish at the NJCAA cross country championship and capped the year with a runner-up finish in the NJCAA half-marathon, an event hosted by JCCC. The women's team recorded a top 10 finish in the half-marathon, placing sixth overall. The teams are coached by Mike Bloemker.
· The JCCC volleyball team recorded a sixth-place finish in this year's NJCAA national tournament. This was the program's fifth straight appearance at nationals and the 10th overall. The team is coached by Jennifer Ei.
· The women's soccer team became the first school from the state of Kansas to qualify for the NJCAA national tournament. In their first appearance, the Lady Cavaliers made it all the way to the championship game, but lost to host Tyler Junior College. JCCC finished the season 19-7-0; those 19 wins tied the school record for a season. Eighteen of the wins were by a shutout, which set a new team record. Goalkeeper Kelly Voigts, who was named the goalkeeper of the national tournament, was credited for all 18 shutouts, tying a national record for a season. The team is coached by Jim Schwab.
· JCCC student Kaitlin Foley is a published author at age 17. Her research paper, Social Networking and the Digital Divide: Why Internet Access Is Vital to Worldwide Communication, is included in a composition textbook, The Norton Pocket Book of Writing by Students, which was released in February 2010. Foley's paper demonstrates the process of drafting and redrafting a research paper in the chapter, A Work in Progress. A student in Dr. Andrea Broomfield's Composition II class in spring 2009, Foley wrote two drafts of her paper for a class assignment.
· Forty-nine top community college scholars from the state of Kansas were honored Feb. 18 in Topeka for their academic accomplishments. Representing JCCC was Megan Walkowiak. With a 3.93 GPA, she plans to transfer to Kansas State University to major in education. At JCCC she has been the vice president of membership/service of the college's Phi Theta Kappa chapter, a student ambassador (CAV Leader), a member of the college's concert band, a note taker and math/statistics tutor, a volunteer for the annual Lose the Training Wheels program, a member of the student groups Via de Esperanza and Invisible Children, and listed on the President's Honor Roll.
· The JCCC debate team was awarded the prestigious McClintock Award, which is presented to the national champion community college team, at the Cross-Examination Debate Association (CEDA) National Tournament held in Berkeley, Calif., in March. The CEDA national championship is based on the team's success during the entire season in competition with four-year colleges and universities as well as other community colleges. This is the first championship title for JCCC in eight years and the fourth year in a row JCCC has been in the top three in community college sweepstakes. Individual debaters were also awarded several national recognitions at the various ceremonies during the tournament. Throughout the year, the JCCC debate team was consistently ranked as the top community college, maintained a top 20 national ranking that includes four-year colleges since November, and finished in the top 25 nationwide for the year.
· The interior design program won an Excellence in Education Award for student work in kitchen and bath design from the National Kitchen and Bath Association. Kristeen Armstrong-Scott, adjunct associate professor, interior design, worked with the design students.
· The college has received a letter from the Parliament of Uganda thanking JCCC for its support of Awach Hospital there. A team from the college visited Uganda last year.

Petitions and communications
