  • The Operators,Great Southern Railway, advertise that their passenger trains average 80km/hr for the entire journey, whether it be The Ghan,I.P or Overland. That means that the train must move along quite well and maintain a train speed of 115km/hr for most of the journey...which they appear to have achieved on most occasions. This is World Class for long distance trains on "B" grade rail tracks.

  • That is only true if you discount the 2 and 3 hour stops the train makes in Broken Hill, Adelaide, and Kalgoorlie. The reason the train usually runs close to schedule is that there is plenty of "fat" in the timetable. That said its undoubtedly a world class train.

The track out that way isn't A grade but its not a heavy train and by Australian standards its not bad. It has to be good to take the freight volumes it does, as it moves more than 80% of all east-west cross continental freight.

  • Train speed varied between 100km/h and about 115km/h - I had some amount of trouble overtaking it

  • I assume that your clip is showing the Indian Pacific between Peterborough in S.A and Broken Hill in N.S.W - correct? Thats some pretty good camera work I say. Even considering the fact I am a train driver from Sydney!

  • Pretty correct, though not all that close to Peterborough. About 100km - 50km inside S.A would be my estimate.

  • Good clip enjoyed watching.Very good camera work.Liked it thanks.

  • I counted 15 passenger cars! That is remarkable considering that an American train will probably carry 3 passenger cars or so. How's that for a country with over 300 million? I've been on that train in 1988 and also the Ghan up to Alice. Yanks could learn a lot from Aussie but you can't tell 'em anything!

  • nullarbor es parecido a la patagonia chileno argentina, saludos desde Chile

  • What speed were you driving at to catch up to her??

  • The carriages/wagons/cars, and the terrain, remind me of the old Santa Fe Super Chief. If only they had a set of F-7's pulling 'em, and a round ended obs on the rear!

  • Fair comment and the fact that it does carry the majority of Australias East-West freight volume is a major success story in itself. The track certainly takes a pounding from heavy freighters so the 750/1000 tonnes of stainless steel of the Indian-Pacific would have minimal impact on rail track maintenance on that corridor.Increasing passenger train speed also increases fuel costs and is considered of minimal value on long distance travel trains.Remember..Getting there is half the fun!!
