On February 21, 2009, I found out that in "Skier vs. Tree" the Tree always wins. I love tree skiing and I'm not afraid of cliffs, but on this run in Vail, CO I came upon an unexpected cliff (about 6-8 feet) that had a grove of Aspen trees below it that were quite a bit more dense than I could see as I approached. The initial diagnosis from Alex, the ski patroller that checked me out, turned out to be accurate - a fracture in my 11th posterior rib. Fortunately, a cat scan revealed no significant threat to my spleen or kidney.
Them trees freeze up pretty solid in the winter... gotta be careful.
