Jack Perkins, Florida Gulfcoast Journal, visit the Ukrainian community in North Port Florida sharing their faith, food and fashions. originally aired on WEDU PBS Tampa Aug 26, 2010
I would love to make pysanky eggs. I have been looking for Ukrainian communities to see if they might offer classes. My grandparents were fluent in Ukrainian but sadly I never got to learn. I only know some words and a few phrases. Such a beautiful culture.
@PrudenChris I remove statement I takeit that I think that this say that it was russian and I tired of hearings this things. Ukrainian always never gets credit for tradition because the Americans always put us in same pot with the russian. The rusky alwways copy Ukrainian and then takeit credit. Sorry for my English but I learn it late in life .Thank you
I see that 'the comment made by "Volodyyy " (which has obviously upset a few viewers) has been removed. I'm glad. I don't want to know what was said. This was lovely. It's so rare to see Ukrainian culture presented this way. It's sad that the traditions of this lovely culture are disappearing. People of my generation aren't interested in preserving it unforturnately.
Typical Russian way of thinking, how disappointing but not surprising. Ukrainians are proud of their heritage and it is a wonderful report. As a first generation Ukrainian Canadian where many Ukrainians have settled we are proud to continue these traditions. I too have been to North Port with my parents and witnessed how proud the Ukrainian community was when they first opened their church. It is wonderful to see!
If Volodyyy consulted legitimate historical sources, he would learn that Ukraine was established long before Russia ever came into existence. The cradle of slavic civilization is Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. Russian culture, including their music, embroideries, literature pales in comparison to the richness of the Ukrainians.
Great reporting Jack, as a Ukrainian Canadian I am very impressed to see Americans understanding the traditions and rich culture of Ukraine. We are not Russian, we are our own country with very unique songs, arts and history.
God Bless the community in North Port. I have visited many parts of the world and always take time to investigate Ukrainian churches. See my Ukrainian music website at: Marykas Treasures

North Port is a nice little town but no economy. You have to commute 30 + miles to work.
