The weekend of Saturday 7th of February, 2009 saw bushfires rage across the Australian state of Victoria causing widespread devastation. It was the biggest natural disaster in Australia's history.

173 people were killed and hundreds more injured. Many thousands were left homeless when the fires destroyed their homes.

We remember.

  • I was part of the CFA that travelled to help. It still brings a tear to my eye on occasion. A terribly horrific yet amazing time to be a outback aussie!

Emotions this real are what life is really about.

  • i live up in the northern subs of melbourne. It'll be a day i will never forget. Horrifying on a scale i can hardly comprehend. It looked like the end was coming. also knowing people who have lost friends and family makes it incredibly sad. Homes can be rebuilt but lost loved ones are gone forever. Rest in peace..... nearly a year has passed but the memories are forever.

  • Rest in peace AJ and Jesse Inzitari and Mac and Neeve Buchanan! I had the wonderful honour of meeting Jonathan Inzitari and his amazing father, our family has become extremly close with them.

We even call eachother family, and that takes alot after you've lost you brothers and mother and Wife and children. We are amazed and they are an ispiration to me, rest in peace to every living person and animal who died in 'Black Saturday'

    Never forgotten <3

  • beyond our control as humans mother nature made her mark sweeping raging fires throughout victoriadevastating anyting in its path. We fought, we sent out everything we had to save lives, unfortunately we couldn't save everyone. there are 9 beautiful children in this video

whos lives were cut short, unable to escape they paid the ultimate sacrifice. We should all stop take a breath shed a tear and feel what we have, treasure every second because some were notso lucky. R.I.P

  • I went through it, I'm in this video clip .... Words just can't express what that night was like! let's pray no-one ever has to go through anything like this ever again.

  • We will never forget. To the ones that lost loved ones and to the ones that never made it you will always be in our hearts. R.I.P

  • As a mother of two young boys (6 and 9) I am brought to tears at the image at 7:26. I live in the outer Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne, the closest Fire to me was at Yarra Glen, less than 12 km form me.

I will not pretend to know what goes through the minds of people living in high risk Fire Area's. All I can say, is that I would have been GONE that morning. We were all warned of the Extreme Fire Danger! My Inlaws live in Mt Dandenong. They left at 8am! A house can be replaced, your Family CANNOT!
