The guitar is a direct descendant of an ancient Italian instrument called a LIUTO. The Liuto, or Lute, probably entered Western Europe by way of Constantinople. Actually, the name "LIU"(6)- "TO"(heads) suggests that it may have originated in China;
six pegs were used to hold the strings at the top of the instrument.
