So here's a strange little game I happen to have...it's a weird sort of novelty fighting game, you know the kind I mean, anything that's based on a licensed property and isn't necessarily required to be anything else in its own right. Thus we have Bleach: Shattered Blade for the Wii.

Now, there are a couple of reasons why I find this game fascinating, but most of all it's the fact that this game is entirely motion controlled when it comes to attacks. You heard me.

You have three basic types of attacks: your slash type (horizontal), your chop type (vertical), and your thrust type (stab). Each of these is performed by swinging or thrusting the Wii Remote the way you want to attack. The three types of attacks are something of a loose and fast-paced rock-paper-scissors game, a chop will beat a slash, a thrust will beat a chop, and a slash will beat a thrust.

There are also three different ways to attack: regular attacks, critical attacks, and special attacks. Regular attacks are weak, but fast, and they can be strung together in a flurry of attacks. Critical attacks are much stronger and tend not to be interrupted, but are slower. They also have the advantage of breaking your opponent's guard. Special attacks vary from character to character and generally reflect their personal styles.

I won't burden you with all the details, but the two most important factors in a match are your health, represented by the yellow bar, and your "Bankai" meter at the bottom.

It's interesting that a "Bankai" is not always a literal Bankai, because every character has this meter, even if they don't otherwise have one, even humans like Orihime and Chad, an Arrancar like Arturo Plateado, or a character who hasn't otherwise achieved Bankai yet like a lieutenant who isn't Renji Abarai.

Anyway, my hope is to share a sampling of each of the 32 characters in this game, just to give you an idea of how the game looks and feels.

I will warn you, though: this game moves incredibly fast...almost to a fault. If you blink too many times, you'll miss it. Especially so when a character like Ichigo is on board, he's very beginner friendly and does very well even if you just rush in and hack away at the enemy.

  • is it just me or does he say tensa zONgetsu

  • @The1vicvic1 As opposed to what? The Japanese "a" vowel sounds are always pronounced like "ah," which is very similar to the short "o" sound in English. Therefore, "Zangetsu" is pronounced as you hear it said here.

  • I recall two things about this game, both quotes... "You are weak. So weak." and "Turn to dust and disappear."

  • @YuuGiJoou Yeah, i want Versus crusade too!

I don't understand why they don't release more outside Japan. i mean, Bleach is a pretty poular manga/anime both in and out of Japan.

  • @summyshark That definitely wouldn't hurt. I had kinda hoped that we'd get Versus Crusade outside Japan, and there's still technically hope that they're just waiting for waiting for the English language anime to catch up, but I'd thought that recent trends were starting to reverse that sort of thinking.

    Only time will tell, really.

  • @YuuGiJoou yeah, i agree. But we really need more bleach games.

  • @summyshark I think you've gone and named all the Bleach games released outside Japan there, haven't you? ^_^;

The DS fighting games are solid works by Treasure, although they do play a little "traditionally" with a surprising number of Bleach-y elements mixed in. I did enjoy the first one...and I can't seem to find a copy of Dark Souls for cheap as I'd like.

3rd Phantom was an RPG on the DS and not a bad one at that, particularly since it incorporated so many elements of Bleach into an SRPG.

  • @YuuGiJoou I started playing this a long time ago, it's fun and probably one of the only good bleach games to be released outside of Japan. apart from the ones on the DS and maybe The new one on PS3

  • @chinita0606 loser

  • seygahh!!!
