Growing up Nathan's mother Deb had an addiction to pills, Painkillers. She began growing more and more distant from him and the family. He held and intervention and hid her medication. She went to his classroom, demanded he hand what he had over, he told her to chose him or the pills. She chose her addiction. His girlfriend, Haley, tried to help but failed. So they cut her out of thier lives.

Five years later, Nathan's playing basketball but knows he can't live up to his father's record, so he secretly begins taking performance enhancers to build up his game. Haley finds his bottle of pills, gives him a choice then leaves him. Nathan goes to see his mother is still gradually getting worse, he tells her Haley left him.
