  • I've been very interested in electric cars lately but a few things.

    1) Why can this car beat a Challenger in a drag race but only tops at 120 mph?

    2) It is pretty much impossible to upgrade one of these unless you are some kind of electrical genious? like you cant just go buy an exhaust for it because it doesnt have one.

    3) I know electric cars get all of their torque instantly so is there really any need for manual transmissions? and do they even use them in any electric cars?

  • 1) These EVs typically run between 8:1 and 10:1 final drive ratios, the low gear gives great acceleration but low top speed.

    2) Evs are much simpler than regular cars, stuff like cooling, fuel, ignition, exhaust, intake are all deleted. You can buy all the EV parts off the shelf but you have to figure out how to bolt it in, each car is different.

    3) No multi speed gearbox is needed, most EVs just run a single reduction gear.

  • @Trox3985 The power range is huge but drops rapidly once at around 120 mph. Basically, it needs more gears as the power output drops like in a petrol car in 1st gear and you can't go any faster. If there were enough gears (3 I guess?) then it could get to a similar top speed as cars with similar power outputs, size, aerodynamics etc.

  • @sfcc80 i noticed that too

i think lotus allowed dodge to build an EV based on the lotus europa's designs.

  • @gnoxycat Do you know how many money the goverment makes off our gas money? No way they would help to get that idea being achieved. It's sad actaully.

  • i say bring on the electric cars

    from Sydney Australia

  • so assuming you wanted to change that it would be a mater of disconnecting and installing a new one. transmission is replaced by electronic power controls, which should also answer #3, manual transmission would be a sher waste of power friction is bad, and when you can achieve all of your desired torque and RPM profiles with a fixed ratio, (by varying Amps, and voltage respectively) a manual transmission would be like using a hand saw instead of a circular saw. just a waste of time..and speed.

  • Your question 3 answers question 1. the ability to have any percentage of your HP act as torque at any one time means that you can accelerate a lot faster. Most cars barely reach top speed in a drag if at all. question 2; if "upgrades" were available for a well designed electric car, it would be as easy as changing the ram in your PC to integrate. Electric cars pull all of their drive energy from the electric motor.

  • Why do they sell the cars with batteries?!? Its just stupid. That car could sell for 15k without batteries. Make it a standard replaceable battery with every brand make model of cars that can be exchanged at any gas station in under 1min. If you have an electric SUV or pickup you use 2 - 3. All the batteries would be properly cared for by the gas stations because they would have all the broken ones that cant charge anymore. Gas stations stay in business and everyone can own an electric

  • hey this is Lotus Europa how come badge with Dodge ??

  • Ive seen manuals in converted electric cars, and the ones ive seen have had all the extra gears pulled out that they didnt need. This is just an off the cuff answer id have to do some research what typically is offered on the production electrics. Happy hunting.
