Ostracods swim in cross-polarized light under the 10X lomo objective, prime focus. The varying levels of birefringance are due to the fact that as the ostracod grows, it sheds it shell and with it the layer of calcification. The longer that the ostracod has had its shell, the thicker the crystalline layer.
