At the outset of the strike, no one knew how long it would last (final answer - 5 weeks). They went big on the food; a craft services firm was hired (think film set) that arrived with a truck mounted kitchen, and we somehow negotiated with the union that the food supply van and chefs wouldn't have to wait to cross the picket line. Breakfast=3 kinds of pig meat, eggs, pancakes, yogurt, OJ, cereal. Lunch and Dinner=4 chafing dishes filled with hot food, salads, desserts, drinks. Nighttime and night shifts= free for all kitchen raid. I think back fondly on my first night shift of the strike: it was July 1 (Canada Day), and we had celebrated with a BBQ, complete with little red and white flags everywhere and balloons. I hit the kitchen at 0230h, and collected three leftover kebabs: salmon, shrimp and scallop, and then, another salmon because salmon is possibly the most delicious animal on the planet. (Except dog.) Add roasted potatoes, yogurt, granola bars, 2 cans of juice, some Halloween sized chocolate bars - heaven! I was gorging (and checking the SCADA system to make sure everything was running perfectly, yada yada yada) and enjoying Coast to Coast AM until 0400h. Then I had a fruit cup. Then just one tiny little wafer....and....BOOM! But seriously, almost everyone porked up during the strike. I'm hitting the gym regularly now; You should see me, I have a body like an anvil. Really.
