Do not attempt to adjust your television: I am filming this with a 4:3 only capable camera. Sorry for the black bars.

There are a lot of PS3 UT3 videos on youtube, but very few showcase the game's ability to support keyboard and mouse play. So here's a good few mins showing what this game can do. Forgive the sloppy gameplay. Mouse and keyboard aside, I'm not too great at the game to begin with. I am also aware that there are many custom mouse controllers and adapters for kb&m that will allow use with games that do not contain native support. However, this video is not about that. This video is about native keyboard and mouse support for Unreal Tournament III.

Sadly, UT3 is the only console FPS this generation to support the keyboard and mouse. Big props goes to Epic games for including it.

Most are very familiar with the Dreamcast's dedicated keyboard and mouse and the inclusion of support for nearly every first person shooter released on the system. Several of the earlier FPSs on the Playstation 2 supported USB keyboard and mouse play. PS2 versions of Deus Ex, Unreal Tournament, Soldier of Fortune, Half Life, Red Faction 2 and others allowed the player to simply plug a mouse and keyboard into the USB ports of the PS2 and play. Most games even allowed fully mappable keyboard configurations.

Though current generation consoles are fully capable of this feature, developers have largely ignored ignored the KB&M configuration for console first person shooters. The reasons are debatable (though Microsoft seems adamant against mouse use on the 360 while Sony doesn't seem to care either way) and modern first person shooters are designed around controllers, so it isn't as important as it once was. It would be nice to have an option, however. And I could not imagine trying to play a game such as Quake III Arena or UT99 with a controller.

For this video I am playing on a cheap $10 mini keyboard and a Logitech MX 518 gaming mouse.

  • Do people still play this game? Even after CoD: BO and Killzone 3 came out? Because if so, I am interested in getting it for the multiplayer and KB&M support. I am really sick of all these Tactical Shooters now a days.

  • @MAT0R0 People still play... but it's usually the same groups over and over again. And they are so good that it's difficult to keep up. Let me know if you pick up the game and I'll hop online and play.

  • I've been looking to get this game it looks awesome!

  • @TheUnbiasedGamer Cool man! Let me know when you do. We'll play online!

  • Interesting info about keyboard and mouse use for the consoles. Too bad later games don't have that option.

  • @narox Yeah, it's kind of weird how developers just kind of abandoned kb&m support for consoles at some point in the mid 2ks. One of the most controversial removals of support was with the Warhammer "Fire Warrior" FPS on PS2. A demo released on an Official Playstation Magazine demo disc actually included keyboard and mouse support (and it was damned good). The final release of the game had no support. This left a lot of people scratching their heads.

  • Devs won't do keyboard and mouse on a multiplayer console game because any player with a mouse has a monumental advantage, even going against controller users with auto aim. I think the only way a controller could compete with a mouse would be if the controller had one of it's sticks replaced with a trackball or very precise inertial simulated touch surface (basically emulating a trackball).

  • The game I was hoping would also include keyboard/mouse support is Rage. Unfortunately Id software did not support it. Going forward it will be interesting to see if Epic includes kb/m support in future PS3/4 titles.

  • Another cool thing about this game is you can run your own dedicated server for the ps3 version ON YOUR PC. Epic released the dedicated server software about 2 years ago. Anybody can download it for free and host a server on their pc. Epic also built in mod support which is awesome. You should download the CBP3 map packs(Community Bonus Pack Volume 3). The maps are very high quality.

  • It's nice to see UT3 be given some love. It was highly overlooked this generation. :(

  • Nice gameplay footage.

  • wish I could use a key bourd/mouse ,kinda silly that this gen of consols dont really use them when 90% of games are FPS and the consols are more like pcs

  • @wip3outguy7 Sure i'll make sure to get it for PS3 then! :)
