Tom Sneva might have, but none of the other drivers did. Geoff Bodine decided to go back to a full-face helmet after Terry Labonte's crash in the 1982 season finale at Riverside. Incidentally, 1982 marked a major milestone for the Daytona 500, as '82 was the first year it was the season-opening race, which it still is today. There have been many milestones in the history of this race, but this one is often overlooked, but may be as important as any in race history.

CBS was incorrect about Labonte's Daytona 500 record prior to 1982. He actually finished sixth in the 1980 race. Also, the 13 car was driven in the Busch clash by 1976 Daytona 500 winner David Pearson, but Pearson, for the second time in three years, didn't have a car to drive in the Daytona 500, which is an absolute travesty of justice. By the way, this was the comeback race for both A.J. Foyt and Donnie Allison. Incidentally, Allison drove for Foyt in the 1970 and 1971 Indianapolis 500s.

this kyle petty's rookie season?
1982- the year of "Bumpergate", when the rear bumper of Bobby Allison's Buick flew off (some said intentionally) and he went on to dominate the race. Still the good ol days, tho, when the cars looked awesome & u didn't have to listen to hours of pre-race B.S.!
