This is a priceless gem and unfortunately one of too few live opera performances by Toscanini. For decades he was an opera conductor almost exclusively and we have virtually none of it saved for posterity. One can only imagine what was lost. Fortunately this, and other gems were recorded and can be appreciated. Thanks for posting.

This amazing performance, which utilized renowned singers from the Metropolitan Opera, took place in Madison Square Garden on May 25, 1944. For some reason, when RCA Victor first realized this on discs, they failed to note that Toscanini's NBC Symphony Orchestra was supplemented by members of the New York Philharmonic, which he had regularly conducted from 1926 to 1936 and then occasionally as a guest conductor until 1945.
