Correct. The term freestyle is more narrowly defined than I had realized.

Blues is an improvisational dance, which is different than freestyle.
i know this based on my experience in an array of different dances including east and west coast swing, ballet, polka, waltz, viennese waltz, foxtrot, blues (of course), and a few others.

he is directing her where to go, keeping the tempo, guiding their movements, etc.
the lead usually doesn't appear to do as much as the follow, but that's 'cause it's about making her shine!
