Gary Knutson of McLaren is credited for McLaren's use of staggered length intake trumpets. By using two different intake tract lenghes, he was able to smooth a double-humped torque curve that had been characteristic of big Chevy V8's used previously in Can-Am. In any event, the staggered velocity stacks look so bitchin'!
-
@Wrulol: What an idiotic comment. Egads man, the velocity stacks were staggered because of the individual ports and airflow. Back in 1972, you would have been laughed right out of a racetrack because of such a stupid thing to say. Retarded? Methinks you are the retarded one.
-
Whats with the retarded velocity stacks?

@clydeyello Also reliability with the motor is needed to win championships. It'd need rebuilds too frequently if it was pumping 2000hp. The proof's in the pudding with drag cars. :)

@SuperInline6 sorry my fault i thought it was the mercedes engine. the m8f...
-
@thepainbob666 so, it's not a chevy Big block? What kind of engine is that?
-
@SuperInline6 chevy big block is a joke compared to that.

Honda and BMW had from 1350-1470 bhp in qualifying trim and 1000-1100 bhp in race trim, back in 80's.
-
@doowaditti Probably they would be in the 1200-1400bhp range. A reciprocating engine under ten litres of displacement could easily produce 2500-3000hp, but that kind of power is unmanageable - too much stress over the transmission organs, and where in the world are you supposed to get the grip to keep a car that powerful on the track when cornering?
-
@doowaditti well with the improvement of metals and engine building, 1000hp should be easily attainable, as well as plenty of torque. Not a few thousand hp, but having 1000hp in a light body is scary!
that is a fuckin beast
