Is peanut butter good for you?

Well, yes and no.

I'm a big fan of peanut butter. Since I don't eat a lot of sweets, to me peanut butter tastes like a Snicker's Bar. I can eat a whole jar if I really wanted to but that would just be too many calories in one sitting.

Now overall, peanut butter is really healthy and good for you. There have been studies done on peanut butter showing positive health benefits to your health such as a decrease in risk from cardiovascular disease because of the high amounts of monounsaturated fats and resveratrol found in peanuts.

Scientists are also discovering that resveratrol can offer us a huge breakthrough with regards to the aging process. They are finding that it can "save" or repair the telomeres at the end of our cells. Think of telomeres as a string coming out of a cell. As the cell ages, those telomeres get shorter and shorter until there is nothing left and the cell dies. Well, resveratrol has been found to increase the life span of those telomeres and this stuff can be found in peanut butter.

Overall peanut butter is good for you, but you do have to watch out for this one thing.

If you go to your local grocery store or supermarket, look on the back of the label of most leading types of peanut butter brands. It doesn't matter if it's chunky or smooth. On the back of the label you'll probably see that the ingredients listed aren't just peanuts and salt. It should also say hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oil. That is trans fat!

Trans fat is horrible for you and your health. It's been linked to cancer, heart disease, diabetes, weight gain, and obesity. Food manufactures change the chemical composition of the mixture to make it more stable and smooth.

So when you think you're being healthy by eating peanut butter everyday, you're actually eating trans fats.

Not good!

The only way to avoid this is to get natural or organic peanut butter. Once you open the jar, you'll notice a huge difference in texture and consistency. The peanut butter is not as smooth as the junk kind with all the trans fats inside and the oil is liquid at room temperature.

Overall peanut butter is very good for you, but beware of the regular kind that you get in the store. Opt for organic or natural instead and avoid the artery clogging, cancer causing trans fats in the process.

  • I love peanut butter. One thing that bother me is, I recently find out how bad it is hydrogenated oil do to our health, like you say. If hydrogenated oil is really that bad, how come the PB company put it in their products? Do you know why the govt didn't step up to stop them from doing it? And the only problem with "Natural" PB is some of them you have to stir it before serve every time, like Smuckers Natural PB which has oil on top. However, I like the natural one. I do taste the differences.

  • does peanut butter stunt your growth or is that just a myth
