Tashi Dhondup released an album titled Torture without Trace in November 2009. The album comprises 13 songs expressing nostalgia for the exiled Tibetan leader HH the Dalai Lama and remembering the crackdown that followed an anti-Chinese unrest across Tibet in March 2008. Chinese authorities at once banned the album, accusing him of composing subversive songs. Tashi was arrested on December 3, 2009 at gun-point while his wife wept and grabbed one of the police officer's legs in an attempt to hold him back. On January 5, 2010 a Chinese court in Sogpo Mongol Autonomous County, Malho Tibet Autonomous Prefecture, has sentenced him to 15 months jail term and re-education through labour for "separatist activities" related to his music. Tashi was previously detained in September 2008 and accused by Chinese authorities of including 'counter-revolutionary content' in a song entitled 'The Year of 1959,' the year of the Lhasa Uprising and the Dalai Lama's flight into exile, he was detained and beaten for over seven days by police in Xining.

  • I am very happy that Tashi Dhondup is out stupid chinese prison and looks like he is healthy enough to live a normal life. Tashi la, you are our hero and you will be remembered for thousands of years by each and every one of children of the great red faced monkey and she the devil. May live a happy live with your beautiful family.

  • Certainly a brave man for putting it out there. He now languishes in a Chinese forced labour camp for writing and publishing this song. There is an online petition for his release. Google his name and online petition for details. Long live Free Tibet!
