Duke's new Research Drive Garage will open Jan. 4 as the university's latest effort in sustainability.
Construction of the garage began in June 2008 and when completed, will feature more than 1,900 total spaces, including 1,647 for employees and 267 for patients and visitors. Unique aspects of the garage are its green features, which include two 10,000 gallon cisterns that collect rainwater for landscaping; overhead canopies that use plants to provide shade on the roof; and parking spaces with electrical outlets for re-charging hybrid vehicles.
The garage is being considered for a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) designation, a rarity for parking garages.
