More than twelve years ago, a young Australian of Sicilian descent was going about his daily chores building homes. Scooping up the cement and piling up the bricks, suddenly an angle grinder on the building site exploded, badly injuring his arm. His major source of income was snuffed out in seconds. Naturally, he was devastated, but his younger sister encouraged him to take his mind off things while the body undertook to heal itself naturally. With time on his hands, the young man, Rosario La Spina, turned to singing. Hed dabbled in competitions as a young boy, singing pop. There was certainly a voice there fast forward some years and hes conquering the big opera stages around the world. ROSARIO, his self-titled album is his debut solo recording under a new exclusive contract with Universal Music Australia (Decca) and ABC Classics. Highlighting six the great heroic roles of the tenor repertoire Calaf (Turandot), the Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto), Cannio (Pagliacci), Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), Radamès (Aida) and Oronte (I Lombardi), the CD also weaves in a host of Neapolitan songs, as much the province of the great tenors as the operatic roles they sang. Many of the arrangements for these songs are by the conductor on this recording, Richard Mills

  • I was fortunate enough to see Opera Australia's production of Tosca with Rosario in the role of Cavaradossi. His performance was nothing short of PHENOMENAL. It was my very first experience of a standing ovation - intuition tells me he has a great future.
