easy, dominant 7s take mixolydian, or even minor pentatonic if you want the robben ford feel. Minors take aeolian (natural minor) and dorian or phrygian, major takes ionian, half diminished uses locrian (m7b5 chord is half diminished), when you start getting into trickier chords like flat 9's or sharp 5's you can still keep to the basic modes but the great players use altered or augmented scales. there are also substitutions to use that you can figure out by looking at theory in depth.

great lesson, please put up a lesson on which scales to use in a tune, for instance minor or major, etc, sort of tonal centers or something like that. I see a tune in a fake book and know only the basics about soloing over it, but need more knowledge about it. thanks a lot
