Andrew Haig (ex-Kelsae Laddie) asked me to write a song for civic week... The rough live version is available on youtube also, but this is the proper, fully recorded version...

"Yetholm Day"

Doon tae the square in early morn'
Tae watch the laddie ride
As he hauds the flag abin his steed
It fills us a' wi pride
The crowds they fill the pavements
"3 cheers" ye hear them say
As they a' heed oot frae Kelsae toon
Tae ride on Yetholm day

Oh-oh, tae ride, tae ride
Oh-oh, tae ride on Yetholm day

Ower they come, by Venchen Hill
Kirk Yetholm in their sights
The laddie an' his followers
A' decked wi blue and white
The wine and beer flows freely
And their havin' picnics tae
As the Kelsae folk a' gether roond
On this bonnie Yetholm day

Oh-oh, tae ride, tae ride
Oh-oh, tae ride on Yetholm day

The Riders gether on the lawn
Tae watch the eightsome reel
Dancing tae the pipers tune
The lassies hearts tae steal
And off they gallop through the haugh
The laddie's on his way
Ridin' hame tae Kelsae
On the laddie's Yetholm day

Oh-oh, tae ride, tae ride
Oh-oh, tae ride on Yetholm day

Arivin' back by Maxwellhugh
In pairs, side by side
An' at the presentation
The youngest rider stands wi pride
The laddie hands the flag back
Unsullied and unstained
Which marks the end o civic week
Upon this Yetholm Day

Oh-oh, tae ride, tae ride
Oh-oh, tae ride on Yetholm day
Oh-oh, tae ride, tae ride
Oh-oh, tae ride on Yetholm day

  • I suppose I should explain too that when I say Kelso is only 4 miles from the border it doesn't mean there are large English communities there. along the river there are only tiny (what the English would call) hamlets. Immediately to the south of the Kelso-yetholm-Jedburgh area there is just wild sparsely populated hill country.

  • Maxwellheugh is a part of Kelso. We are about 4 miles or so from the border. What you describe does happen in that real locals from Coldstream speak completely differently from real locals just across the border in Cornhill and the same with Ladykirk and Norham etc. Close communities but different communities going to different schools etc. The accents and dialects evolve at an early age.

  • How come its kinda a pure Scottish accent? when... Maxwellheugh is like near the border. I'm looking at towns near Scottish/English border and wondering how can an accent be different from 250 metres away 1 town in Scotland to 1 town in England 250m apart .. strange.

  • good song pal

  • Excellent song, seen it performed at the Tait Hall on the Wednesday night of civic week 2008. Love it, Well Done

  • Congrats, I love the song and thanks for the complementary pictures from the event! Thanks for posting.

  • I was also asked to write a song about the night the Bari Gadgi got busted.
