This is the first part of a two part video tutorial about setting up IK/FK Switching Leg Rig in Blender 2.5 Alpha 0.

IK/FK Switching (Inverse Kinematics vs Forward Kinematics) allows you to use both control methods in your animations. IK is useful for making the end of a chain of bones (like the foot is the end of the leg chain) stay in one place. FK is useful for making your animations follow nice arcs.

This tutorial series builds on a previous tutorial for creating a nice Reverse IK Foot Rig, but it also stands on it's own. You can watch the Reverse Foot Rig tutorials here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tApdSx_4b0Q

You can download the rig that's shown at the beginning of the video here: http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=172128

You can download Blender 2.5 Alpha 0 here: http://www.blender.org/download/get-25-alpha/

  • This tutorial is far superior to the "Rigging an Alien" on BlenderCookie. you should make videos for them, you could make some money too!

  • Your rigging videos are absolutely fantastic. If I could make one suggestion, that would be to speak up a bit. I have to really crank the volume to hear you.

I've learned more from your videos on rigging than any other single place. Really nice work!

  • can you make another tutorial showing how to stretch the legs?

  • at 1:14 the foot controls

in which part of leg rigging you create those curves to control the foot?

  • So, it's probably because I'm using 2.54 Beta, but the IK-FK switcher things in the rigging download aren't working for me at all.

  • This is really good. I'm using 2.53 now. Blender used to have a button in 2.49 that would flip or mirror keyframes to create a quick walk cycle. It's not there now. Does anyone know how to select the keyframes then flip them instead of placing them in the opposite position manually?
