Editorial January 2010

Ayubowan, welcome to the twelfth issue of the online IT magazine diGIT.

First of all, greetings for the new year that has dawned on us. Hope you have got your new years resolution list created and am sure you would be able to stick to it.

I hope you enjoyed the new look pdf of the magazine in our last issue. Thanks to all those who gave us positive feedback and to those who suggested more improvements. Do check this months pdf and you will notice further improvements put in place. Now, the web version of diGIT has an events calendar and we encourage you to let us know of any IT related events happening in your area. We would be more than glad to update the calendar with your event details.

You may also notice the diGIT IT lab project initiative. All profit generated from paid advertisements placed on diGIT would go towards this initiative and would enable a lucky school to get an IT lab. Our initial target would be to have 4 diGIT IT labs in Sri Lanka and expand thereafter. If you have the capacity to help out, do visit the IT lab page for more information.

The new year brings us new contributors. In addition to foreign contributors from the US, UK and Romania, this time we have 2 from India joining with diGIT. They are Sourav and Gaurav. We also have Amitha from our mainland giving articles on emarketing. We like to further expand our list of contributors to diGIT so if you feel you have the capacity to contribute and share your knowledge with the rest of the world, then do write to us. Check http://digit.lk/contribute for full details.

2009 saw a great deal of IT activities taking place in Sri Lanka and around the world. Weve had many big events taking place in Sri Lanka ranging from ImagineCup to Apache Asia roadshow. 2009 also saw the end to a bitter 30 years war in Sri Lanka and 2010 is sure to be a year of opportunity and creating solutions using IT should be our priority.

Onto this months issue, Nuwan Bandara gives us a crisp article on the fundamental elements of Service Oriented Architecture. Continuing from last months issue, he gives the building blocks of pillars of SOA. Dive into his article to see more details.

Sameera Gayan tells us to dive and dig a little deeper into ruby on rails. This months article Sameera tells us the theory behind the work he covered in the previous two issues. Do check his article to see if Rails does in fact make developers lifes easier.

Udaya does a tremendous contribution to diGIT not only in giving a monthly article but also giving a weekly cartoon. Do check out his shatoons out every week.

Let me end the editorial with the first quotation for the new year with one from the The Republic by Plato.

The direction in which education starts a man will determine his future life.

Happy reading!

W.G.T.Fernando
