Go to http://www.knewton.com/gmat/ for hundreds of GMAT math and verbal concepts, thousands of practice problems and much more. Knewton GMAT is a GMAT prep course that redefines everything you thought you knew about online learning.

A pronoun can replace a proper noun, a common noun, or a noun phrase or clause. The noun whose place the pronoun takes is called the pronoun's antecedent. A pronoun is said to refer to its antecedent. Therefore, the lack of a clear connection to the pronoun and the noun that it renames is called an error of pronoun reference. Here's an example:

They will tell you that air traffic delays are less likely early in the morning than during the afternoon.

Who are they? This is an error of pronoun reference because the relationship is not clear. A better sentence would be the following:

If you ask experienced travelers, they will tell you that air traffic delays are less likely early in the morning than during the afternoon.

This is correct because "they" now refers to experienced travelers.
