Old Film of making locomotives in Schenectady from 1942. The film "Great Rail" did not directly talk about ALCO but showed its facilities in full production. Watch them lower great steel boilers atop chassis. It shows the creation of the massive wheels for the steam engines. Talks about necessary maintenance for America's largest locomotives

  • I have this on VHS. I think this was actually a promotional video that New Haven made.

  • @atsf3415dbr This is an excerpt from the film "Great Rail" - New Haven and other companies would send their locomotives back to the major facilities at Schenectady and other small service stations downstate.

  • @atsf3415dbr Yeah it was a Pentrex VHS I have it too, it's great in full length

  • Many main railroads had full machine shops where they could completely rebuild, modify and improve locomotives. Whether or not the footage is of a backshop or Alco, I don't know. But it is possible that it could be either. I would think that because it is a New Haven video and they are talking about the different aspects and shops at the railroad, that it would be one of the New Haven's shops.

  • I jsut took the shop tour at strasburg railroad, and they have alot of those tools you saw in the clip.

  • They tore down a factory to build a Wal*Mart... no wonder America is becoming a lost cause.

  • @EdisonTechCenter I actually think that most railroads had their own shops for major repairs, as well as roundhouses for running repairs.

  • @AlcoFan2010 Yup, that's what it was called.

  • @atsf3415dbr I have the vid too, i think it was called a great railroad at work

  • big boy on slip track = next great video

  • Love to see if blueprints were still available from Schenectady for Lackawanna 565. It would make a lot easier in the restoration ...
